I am Mexican.
Can you speak Spanish?
Yes, Spanish is actually my first language but it is a little rough for me now since I’ve been surrounded by English.
What is your favorite dish from your culture?
If I am being honest I don’t like Mexican food. It’s a basic answer but I would pick tacos if I had to pick one. It’s because I grew up eating it everyday and now I want something new.

What is your favorite cultural holiday and how do you celebrate it?
I would say my favorite would have to be Día de Muertos because it’s sweet that the living get to “reunite” with their deceased loved ones. I personally don’t celebrate it because I am not close with my family in Mexico, but hopefully one day I can have an ofrenda (“Offering” in Spanish).
How do you feel about Hispanic representation in media?
Media has one representation of what being Hispanic looks like. It doesn’t show how diverse we are.
When did you feel the most seen in media as a Hispanic women?
Definitely Hispanic influencers who show off their culture makes me feel proud about being Hispanic. I don’t know, sometimes I feel like “oh if I say this, it makes me different or weird”, but definitely women on social media.

Have you ever dressed in cultural wear?
When I was younger and my mom dressed me up. I feel like I don’t dress myself in cultural wear anymore. In stores, they only sell basic clothes. Sometimes I feel like if I start dressing my culture, people are gonna judge me.
Have you found a Hispanic community at Kent State?
No, I haven’t yet, but I hope to soon.

What is your favorite part of being Hispanic?
Having culture, being able to speak Spanish, and being able to relate to other Hispanic people. I think that we’re so funny!
